I think we all have a need to ascribe greatness, perfection, sovereignty, immutability, glory to an entity other than ourselves. I know I do. I find it the most natural, instinctive thing to gaze at and appreciate the Infinite One. I am convinced no level of sophistication, education, enlightenment, exposure can erase the need to reach beyond myself to One that is infinitely higher than I.
Even though I consider myself quite exposed, educated, technologically advanced in everyway (I am typing this on my Iphone, which I try to optimize) and would be considered ‘progressive’ in my actions, I still have a need to lay aside the weights, the façade, the things that seem capable of eliminating the need for the sacred and just nakedly reach for the One who is known as I Am.
I suspect I am not alone. I think this need to worship and be connected to One infinitely greater than us is one thing we all have in common, regardless of our differences. I think it is also reason to believe that there is One greater than us, who designed that hunger and thirst into us.
I am grateful for the fact that we still live in a world where we are free to satisfy the need to worship in spirit and in truth. The freedom to worship in spirit and in truth also implies the freedom to worship otherwise. I think we all worship even if there remains a void because we are worshipping the created rather than the Creator. The world would be hell if there was no such freedom. I am grateful that I can choose to worship the One who declared himself as the Way, the Truth and the Life.
I have a need to worship. It is my reasonable response to the stirrings within, regardless of my ‘status’. What a joy! I am free to respond by worshipping in spirit and in truth.
