Today is Fathers day and I found a quote that speaks to what I am finding out about being a father.
The guys who fear becoming fathers don’t understand that fathering is not something perfect men do, but something that perfects the man. The end product of child-raising is not the child but the parent.
I find this to be so true because it is not my 2-year old that needs patience, it is I. It is not my 2-year that needs to learn compassion, it is I. It is not my 2-year old that needs to be sensitive, it is I. It is not my 2-year old that needs to practice being present, it is I. It is not my 2-year old that needs to be an example to my children but I.
I could not agree more that the end result of child-raising is the parent not the child. So really, our children develop as we develop. This puts me at rest because I know how imperfect I am and being a father is one of the ways I move towards perfection.
