Christ recreates us

Following Jesus Christ is not following a religion, it is not obeying a set of rules. It is not about going to church on Sundays or obeying the ten commandments.

Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

According to the above verse from the Bible, believing in Jesus Christ makes one a new creation, a new being. Since human beings are spirits, this new being is a new spirit being. This being has a new nature completely different from the old. This new nature is God’s nature, a nature of love. The new creation, the new being is about being, not necessarily about doing. It is about living from a new nature, that would do and create good everywhere today, like Jesus Christ did.

As I meditate on this, I see how much I need to give this new being full expression and I also see how so few of us who are new creation are actually living as new creation in our various domains and areas of calling. My world will be so radically different if I allowed myself to live from the new creation that I am, whose nature is Christ’s rather than my old self-centered, weak self.

A most thrilling benefit of the new life is an assured eternal destiny but how different our world will be if those of us who are new creation actually live as new creation exactly like Jesus Christ, as husbands, wives, parents, siblings, employees, employers. Then we would not just look forward to life after death, we would be experiencing heaven right here on earth, individually and socially.

The more I think about this, the more I realize that Jesus Christ did not come to start a religion. He came to give us new life, new existence, through his death and resurrection. He came to give us the solution to the root cause of all our woes as a race, including social and environmental issues.

Jesus Christ entered into our world to offer us a new nature, which is precisely what we need. Our nature is the reason for our present individual, social, economic, political and environmental conditions. We human beings created the conditions from which we desperately seek relief. Good can only be created I think, if the tendency towards selfishness and evil, which exists in each of our spirits, is replaced with the nature of goodness and love, which is God’s nature.

The more I think about it, the more I want to live and fulfill my calling as the new creation God intended. It is to my mind, the way to address our individual, social, environmental or economic challenges, because Christ recreates us.
