We spend our lives working on ‘projects’, ‘jobs’, ‘deals’, ‘challenges’ and everything but being present in the spirit. I particularly have to remind myself from time to time that what matters most is not my presence in the physical space around me but my presence in the spirit. For me, presence in spirit means presence with and sensitivity to God, the creator of all spirits and matter. Presence with God must lead to presence with the human beings around me, recognizing that I and every other human being are primarily spirit beings. People matter so much to God that He chose to permanently change his nature to become one of us, and died for us. We are so important to God that we are all God thinks about and more than angels, we are who God wants to be with for all eternity.
This realization gives me the boldness to enter into God’s presence because I know that God is more eager to be present with me than I am to be present with Him. I am also reminded from time to time that the human beings that I am connected to matter much more than the projects or deals that I am working on. Projects come to an end, institutions die, businesses collapse but human beings are eternal.
According to C S Lewis, “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilisations—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendours.
Lately, I have been reminding myself to pay attention to the immortals around me. I have been reminding myself that projects, jobs, businesses, deals are only a bridge that connect us to immortals. My life should not be about the job but about creating enough space through the job to be interrupted by immortals. It should be about permitting the immortals around me including my wife or 2 and half year old daughter or staff or my neighbor to ‘interrupt’ my ‘busyness’ and to be completely present with them, just like God is ever ready to be ‘interrupted’ by us ‘lesser beings’ made in His image and likeness.
My presence with the human beings around me is not just so I can bless them but so I can be blessed by them. My complete presence with the immortals around me is refreshing both for me and for them. I fail ever so often at this but I am making it a practice to imitate God by being present with people.
As far as God is concerned, no human being who comes to Him is an interruption, which is why He has left himself open to interruptions 24/7. For God has no schedule but human beings. God is not working on any project but human beings.
How do I make human beings my actual schedule? How do I make my projects, deals, businesses truly be bridges to and for people rather than away and against people? How do I make the things I am working on, contributions to the human spirit? How do I always remember that the human beings I am involved with are more important than, and are actually the reason for what brought us together?
