Not that spiritual

The most spiritual being we know of is purely Spirit and yet, the first thing the scriptures record him as doing is creating physical things, not spirit things. He created the expanse of space and the earth in which we live and move. His works can be seen and felt, they do not merely exist in a mysterious spirit world, removed from our everyday reality.

The same scriptures, speaking of Jesus, declare, “…He created the worlds and the reaches of space and the ages of time [He made, produced, built, operated, and arranged them in order]. He is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light- being, the out- raying or radiance of the divine], and He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God’s] nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power.” The most spiritual being, the invisible God is not only the creator of physical earth and the tangible, visible planets and galaxies but also the upholder of them.

This throws a spanner in the works of what we have thought to be spirituality. It seems to me that to be spiritual like God, there must be tangible non-spirit evidence that fits into our 3 dimensional reality. It seems to me that any so called spirituality that exists only in the invisible realm with no earthly relevance whatsoever, is at least not God’s kind of spirituality, if not fake. After all, God’s spirituality led him to become one of us and dwell among us, becoming an integral part of our history, not content to remain in heavenly places, eternally superior to us, even though he is eternally superior to us. This is God’s kind of spirituality and any spirituality that claims to originate from this God ought to have very non-spiritual results.

The first manifestation of the Holy Spirit in scriptures is in the creation of physical space, physical earth and physical life. When Jesus Christ who is known as God incarnate introduced himself to us, He quoted the Prophet Isaiah who said, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, to preach good news to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives,…comfort all that mourn, give beauty for ashes…” The intended result of the Spirit’s work according to this Prophet, is that “They shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.”

The Holy Spirit creates societal renewal in our 3-dimensional world, just as He was involved in creating our 3-dimensional world at the beginning. If anyone therefore claims to be spiritual and their spirituality only creates “spiritual” results, they are more “spiritual” than the Spirit who created this physical earth, maintains it and renews it.

Spiritual people regardless of their calling should be like the Spirit, the outworking of whose presence delivers good news, binds up the brokenhearted, releases those who are bound, repairs waste cities. They should be like Jesus whose spirituality made him go about doing good and administering healing to everyone that needed it. His spirituality even led him to create something as trivial and mundane as more and better tasting wine at a wedding he was only a guest at. Spiritual entrepreneurs should create more tangible good in and through their enterprises than non spiritual entrepreneurs. Spiritual doctors should have many more healed patients than non spiritual doctors. Spiritual bankers should at the very least not need a bailout for their banks, if not involved in economic restoration rather than exploitation.

Spirituality that does not touch earth and society with tangible goodness is not God’s kind of spirituality. At the very least, it should create tangible, visible but contagious good in the life of the spiritual person. Faith without works is not real faith, it is dead. I love the Yoruba worship song that means “I have come to worship the invisible God whose works are visible.” If the works of “spiritual” people are as visible, there would be more peace on earth and manifestation of goodwill to all.

As far as this kind of spirituality goes, I see that I have a very long way to go. But one thing I have resolved to do is to stay on this path and keep growing. Even the slightest resemblance of it is good for me, my family, my enterprises, my society and my world.
