Stand in the gap

All God requires of us is in any given situation that requires supernatural power and intelligence, be it an individual matter or a global matter, is to stand in the gap. When we do so, He makes power and intelligence available to us to accomplish anything that needs to be accomplished on the planet and today, we have a planet that is groaning.

Standing in the gap means to align ourselves with God, internally. In my mind, the phrase “stand in the gap” is to believe or to agree with God. The scriptures say elsewhere “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal toward him.” He is the one doing the show of strength, not us. He does not need our strength, just our agreement. He created us to need and to use His ability, by standing in the gap.

There can be no divine intervention in our lives and our societies unless there is at least one human being standing in the gap before God. He has delegated authority on this planet to us and even if we destroy ourselves and it, He will never intervene unless a human being stands in the gap. Now, we can be certain that the intervention of God is certain even if we fail to get our acts together because there is a Man in the gap – Jesus Christ – who does not have the ability as other men to stop being loyal to God because God and Humanity are one in Him. This Man has delegated his authority and made His power available to believers in Him and we are not doing a very good job right now.

Ike, one of the commenters on this blog stated, “The steps of God from mercy to judgement are slow, reluctant and measured.” God seeks every opportunity for mercy. At the request of a man who was neither a citizen nor resident of Sodom and Gomorrah, God was ready to spare those cities if even the fewest number of righteous people were found there. In the book of Ezekiel, God recounted the abominable sins of His people and even after that He was reluctant to pour judgement saying, “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.”

One man standing in the gap is all that is needed to save an individual or a society and turn the tide, any tide. You can stand in the gap. Will you stand in the gap? Hey, you may die standing in the gap but how else do you want to die? Standing on the sidelines?

  1.  “There was not a man to be found in the land who could stand in the gap”….how sad! I thank God He did find a Man to stand between my sin and a holy God. That Man is the Lord Jesus Christ…and God sees those who belong to Him in Christ. I an thankful for the Man who stands in the gap today!!

    • And because He stands in the gap, we can stand in the gap today. When we do, no force in the universe can successfully oppose God’s plan on this planet.

May we be people willing to stand in the gap today for our families, our neighborhoods, our societies, our nations and our planet. Amen.

  2. Good stuff, Tolu! My kids and I have been memorizing one of the verses you mentioned: 2 Chronicles 16:9. The NIV says that the Lord shows himself strong to those whose hearts are fully commited to Him. Another version says “whose heart is perfect toward Him”. It is Jesus who has made us new and perfect in the sight of the Lord, clothing us in His own righteousness. Let us be worthy of the calling we have received. Let us be fully commited and loyal to our Lord and stand in the gap!! Let us join our Savior in building (and being) His life-building bridge of reconciliation. I am with you in this, brother. Thank you!

    • What a scripture to teach kids! They will grow up to be giants and world shakers on Christ’s behalf. Amen.

We so need the Lord showing himself strong on this planet today because many think all the power that exists is human and we have been called to stand in the gap so the ability of God can be evident to all.
