The Christ of Christmas

6 years ago, I “downloaded” these words for a Christmas recital I had at church. I read it again a few days ago and realized it was still apt. I made some amendments and decided to post it on my blog this Christmas.

In the beginning, before time began, before the heavens and the earth were created, there existed only God in all of eternity. In that beginning, there was the Word of God. He was with God and He was God, for no one and nothing existed in that beginning, but God.

The heavens and the earth were put together by the Word of God, and man also, who God made in His image and after His very likeness. The first man and woman had a perfect relationship with God until they yielded to Satan’s temptation and disobeyed God. They (we) were created by God to be capable of obedience and therefore, disobedience. As soon as man fell, God who is Love, revealed a plan to restore man and the first prophecy about the coming Restorer of man came from God Himself.

God said to the deceiver, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her Offspring; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel.” The fall of man from the position he occupied with God, from his relationship with God is responsible for all the evil in the world today. We all fell, we all sinned when Adam and Eve fell and so we needed a savior, we needed a redeemer. Supreme justice demanded that someone  pay the penalty for our sins. God in his infinite mercy had the answer from the beginning.

Starting with the first prophecy God gave in the Garden of Eden, there were many other prophecies that pointed to a coming Messiah that will restore humanity and creation to their original place of glory. That Messiah would be the seed of the woman, meaning he would be human because God had said. “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her Offspring.” The coming Messiah would be a descendant of Abraham, the promised seed of Isaac and of Jacob, Jewish patriarchs, by God’s sovereign choice. He would also descend from the Jewish tribe of Judah according to the pronouncement by the patriarch Jacob thousands of years earlier, that “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come.” This Messiah would be that seed of Abraham through whom the whole world would be blessed, including me from a tribe that is connected to Abraham only through Abraham’s great grand parent Noah, like the rest of the world.

The Messiah would be born of a virgin as stated by prophet Isaiah – “Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” The child would grow into sonship. He would be God, the creator of heaven and earth and the Prince of Peace, according to the word of God spoken by the prophet Isaiah – “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” The coming Messiah, the Child, would be fully human and fully God! God would pay the penalty for the sin we committed, in order to restore us to himself!

The redeemer of humanity would be born in Bethlehem, according to what prophet Micah said – “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” He would be God, who is everlasting, the same yesterday, today and forever.

True to the word of God, spoken several years earlier by many different people far removed from each other historically, Immanuel who is Jesus Christ the Messiah, was born at the time appointed, 2000 years ago. He was born in Bethlehem precisely as was spoken and recorded years before, to a virgin named Mary. He was born in a manger because all the inns were full at the time, due to a worldwide census, which was itself an indication that God was in the details. The Word of God, the eternal Word of God, who was with God at the beginning and was God, became human and dwelt among us. His parents named him Jesus the Christ, which points to his mission, to rescue mankind from the decadence and corruption that became our nature thousands of years ago, at the fall. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God but through Jesus and only through the Creator can we be recreated. Only through him do we have hope, for Christ in us is the hope of glory.

Jesus Christ the Messiah had a mission on earth so he grew from “babyhood”. For “the Child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.” Jesus “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” Jesus became a man, “anointed with the Holy Ghost and with power”. He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him. He came to reveal God (Love) to us, to show us what we should be like. Jesus Christ did many things, only a fraction of which were recorded.

The miracles He performed show His supremacy and lordship over evil, as a human like us, fully dependent on God. He showed us the weakness of this present darkness when we are completely aligned with God. He promised that we will be able to do similar exploits as Him and more, if we believe in Him as was recorded in the book of John, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father.”

But Jesus Christ did not stop at miracles. He had a mission that transcended miracles among a select group of people in a certain geographic area, in a certain period of time. He had a mission to eternally redeem everyone everywhere and restore us all to our original position in relation to God. He came to provide the eternal solution, the permanent anti-virus to the virus introduced into our genes in the garden. He was God who we sinned against, He was God who suffered for our sin!

He became our sacrificial lamb and paid the penalty for our sins when he was crucified and died on the cross, in historically verifiable details. After three days, after the Jewish passover, as He had prophesied and as God had spoken through many people years before his birth, Jesus Christ rose up from the dead, never to die again, having offered himself as a sacrifice once and for all and obtained eternal redemption for humanity. This is God’s eternal solution to the woes of humanity, which all started when our nature got corrupted. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” And to all those who receive him, “to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”

Even in the 21st century, all who choose to believe in this Christ become sons and daughters of God, reigning in life with Jesus Christ, seated with Him, with God, which was God’s original and immutable intention. That Jesus Christ is no longer the only begotten son, He is now the first begotten son because I and billions of others are begotten too. Christmas was when Christ permanently changed natures so that humanity became fused with divinity permanently. God became a Man. When we believe, we permanently change natures too – divinity becomes fused with our humanity. Man becomes a god!

Right now, that Christ is seated at the right hand of God’s throne as our high priest and advocate in heaven. Shortly, on a day and a time known only to God, the Author of creation, who chose to be in the shadows hitherto, will reveal Himself physically and fully claim time, space and His creation, as surely as He became flesh and dwelt among us for a season and as was prophesied severally. This time, as truly deserving Lord and King, as is recorded in that seemingly antiquated book called the Bible, which I have chosen to believe. Then, there will be true peace on this planet. In the interim, those of us actively following Him will act as instruments of the Prince of Peace, in our limited domains and to the extent of our knowledge.

This is what I believe about Jesus Christ. Before time began, there was the Word of God. When time shall be no more, there would be the Word of God, who is Christ Jesus, the Lord and Creator of the heavens and the earth. He does not have a beginning, He is the beginning. He does not have an end, He is the end. He is alpha and omega, the first and the last, same and relevant yesterday, today and forever, the bright and morning star, the ancient of days and the soon coming King. He is coming again, not as a baby in a manger, but as the King of kings and the Lord of lords, a real Human, very God.

This is the Christ of Christmas. He is everything I want to be. Merry Christmas to everyone and thank you for giving me audience throughout this year. I pray this Christ of Christmas reveals Himself to you more in 2011.
